Here's where I'd spend the eight encoders, and what changes when each one lives on hardware:
VCF1 Cutoff - Zebra2 ships with over twenty filter types, and every one of them comes alive under a knob. Sweeping a ladder filter by hand while a pad sustains tells you more about a patch in five seconds than five minutes of clicking.
VCF1 Resonance - The partner control. Zebra's filters go from polite emphasis to full self-oscillation, and the musical zone in between is easiest to find with cutoff in the other hand.
OSC1 WaveWarp - Each Zebra2 oscillator morphs through a 16-slot wave set, and WaveWarp is the control that scans it. On a knob it becomes the timbral heart of the patch, a slow sweep turns a static waveform into an evolving one, and that movement is the signature Zebra sound.
XY Pad 1 (X and Y) - The four XY pads on the Perform page are Zebra2's macro system, and nearly every factory and third-party patch wires them to its most dramatic transformations. Two encoders give you a patch's full expressive range without knowing a thing about its mod matrix.
FM Depth (FMO1) - Zebra's FM oscillators add growl and metallic edge, and FM depth is wildly sensitive to small moves. This is precisely the kind of parameter where a high-resolution encoder beats a mouse drag, the difference between subtle grit and total chaos is a few degrees of rotation.
LFO1 Rate - Whatever the LFO drives, vibrato, filter wobble, WaveWarp movement, having its speed under a finger means you can push modulation from a slow drift to an audible flutter in one motion.
ENV1 Release - Zebra2 scores a lot of cinematic work, and release time is what turns a plucked texture into a hall-filling swell. Adjusting it while the MIDI loop cycles beats the stop-tweak-listen routine every time.
Delay or Reverb Mix - The effects grid is part of Zebra's finished sound. Riding a send by hand lets you place the patch in space by ear, and pulling it dry for a transition is a move you'll actually perform, not just automate.
